Cognex / Webscan

Founded in 1995 by Glenn Spitz, Webscan specialized in developing high-accuracy 1D, 2D, and Direct Part Marking (DPM) barcode verifiers. The company established a strong reputation in the medical, packaging and defense industries ensuring barcodes meet strict ISO/IEC standards.

Cognex Corporation acquired Webscan in 2017, adding verification capabilities to its well-established barcode reading product line.

Today, Cognex verifiers are used for ISO and DPM quality compliance with applicable industry standards to provide detailed, auditable reports for packaging, pharma, and industrial applications.

All Cognex verifiers are camera-based quality tools  that specifically identify the root causes of barcode problems so they can be addressed and corrected.

Founded in 1995 by Glenn Spitz, Webscan specialized in developing high-accuracy 1D, 2D, and Direct Part Marking (DPM) barcode verifiers. The company established a strong reputation in industries like packaging and defense for ensuring barcodes met strict ISO/IEC standards. Cognex Corporation acquired Webscan in January 2017, enhancing its barcode verification capabilities.

Key historical developments include:

  • 1995: Webscan is founded with a focus on high-precision, camera-based, and laser verification technologies.
  • Industry Standards: Webscan became an instrumental contributor to 2D Direct Parts Marking (DPM) guidelines, such as AIAG B-17.
  • Technology Evolution: The company’s TruCheck™ family developed, integrating 2D imaging to grade symbols based on ISO/IEC standards.
  • 2017 Acquisition: Cognex acquired Webscan, integrating its technology into a broader portfolio of industrial machine vision and identification tools.
  • Software Updates: Cognex has continued to update the TruCheck software (e.g., version 3.03.67), supporting 2020 ISO/IEC 29158 revisions and GS1 data format checks.

Today, Webscan verifiers, now part of Cognex, are used for compliance with standards like GM 1724 and to provide detailed, auditable reports for packaging, pharma, and industrial applications.
